A romantic drama directed by Sam Mendes. The movie is set in the 1990s in a French suburb and follows the life of a man named Eugene (Oliver Jackson-Cohen) who becomes fixated on a woman (Olga Kurylenko) he sees through a window while working as an electrician.

Eugene is married and has a son, but he is unsatisfied with his life and begins to obsess over the woman in the window. He eventually discovers that she works at a nearby factory and begins to visit her during her lunch breaks, where they strike up a friendship. The woman, whose name is Alma, is also unhappy with her life and shares her dreams and aspirations with Eugene.

As their relationship deepens, Eugene begins to take risks to be with Alma, including breaking into her apartment and lying to his wife about where he is going. Alma, meanwhile, is struggling with her own personal demons and the consequences of a traumatic event from her past.

The film explores themes of obsession, desire, and the search for meaning in life. Eugene and Alma’s relationship is intense and passionate, but ultimately unsustainable, as they are both trapped in their own personal struggles.

The cinematography in the film is stunning, with vivid colours and beautiful shots of the French countryside. The performances by Jackson-Cohen and Kurylenko are powerful and nuanced, capturing the complex emotions of their characters.

Overall, “Empire of Light” is a visually stunning and emotionally impactful film that explores the complexity of human relationships and the pursuit of happiness.
