In this blog, the George Pub team shares the story behind their popular pub and the only brewery in the heart of Royal Tunbridge Wells, Fonthill Brewing Co.

Looking for something quintessentially British to do on your visit to Tunbridge Wells? Let us introduce you to The George Pub and Fonthill Brewery, where the tradition of pub culture meets the art of brewing!

A Historic Pub with a Delightful Surprise

Built in the early 1700s, The George is a historic coaching inn that once catered to travellers on their way to and from London. The grade-2 listed building has been lovingly restored, complete with wooden beams, exposed brickwork, log fires, cosy nooks, and a beautiful beer garden, into a family-friendly, award-winning pub with a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

But a coaching inn wouldn’t be complete without its stables, and in the case of The George, the Old Stables are home to Fonthill Brewing Co., where the liquid magic brews ten firkins—or 720 pints—at a time.

Fonthill Brewery and Taproom

From their two-and-a-half-barrel plant in the Old Stables, Fonthill Brewing Co. supply their three Tunbridge Wells Pubs, The George, The Sussex Arms, and The Ragged Trousers with their very own independently brewed keg and cask.

“The English Hops we use—Fuggles, Goldings—are grown in Kent and sourced locally,” Paul, head brewer at Fonthill Brewing Co, explains. Other hops are sourced internationally from Europe and as far as the U.S., where the different climates allow for a variety of rich flavours to come through. This careful selection ensures that every ale and keg produced by Fonthill Brewery is not only unique but also of exceptional quality.

The brewery taproom is open every weekend, giving both residents and visitors of Tunbridge Wells the opportunity to visit Fonthill’s brewing space while testing some exceptional drinks.

Events

From concerts and fundraisers to ukulele nights, The George makes for a warm and inviting venue for a variety of events. Keep your eyes on their social media for updates on upcoming events.
