The George is a family friendly brewpub, with real fires, taproom, courtyard, and a lovely beer garden.

History

In 1739, The George operated as a coaching inn catering to travelers journeying between Tunbridge Wells and London. Even today, the building’s interior emanates a sense of nostalgia and comfort from every angle, characterized by its exposed beams, brickwork, fireplaces, and oak floorboards. Whether individuals seek a serene setting for a quiet drink, forge new family memories, or plan to convene with friends, The George offers an ideal location.

Today

Ownership of The George rests in the hands of Richard Simm and Jason Dorman, who share joint ownership of the well-known Tunbridge Wells Forum. In addition to The George, the duo also holds ownership of The Ragged Trousers and The Sussex Arms, situated in The Pantiles. In a pivotal move, they rescued these establishments from closure in 2008. Their deep-rooted connection to Tunbridge Wells is evident as they wholeheartedly embrace the town’s ethos and champion independent pubs. This devotion resonates throughout their venues, solidifying their reputation as some of the finest independent pubs within Tunbridge Wells.

Delicious Food

The establishment’s kitchen operates from Thursday to Sunday, presenting an array of both substantial and smaller dishes. Whether patrons are in search of a midday meal, a hearty dinner, or a light snack, the menu caters to their needs comprehensively. With a commitment to freshness, all culinary offerings are meticulously crafted from locally sourced, top-quality seasonal ingredients. This dedication to using the best produce drives the regular updates to the menu. Additional details about the kitchen’s operating hours can be found on the website for further reference.

Brewery & Tap Room

Within the premises of The George, you can discover Fonthill Brewing Co., situated in the adjacent Old Stables. This compact yet skilfully designed 2.5 barrel facility specializes in crafting genuine ale, producing 10 firkins at a time for distribution within the pub as well as at their affiliated venues. In addition to this, the establishment takes pride in producing their own kegged beer. This endeavour ensures that several taps are dedicated to serving locally produced, environmentally conscious beer, brewed just a stone’s throw away.

Visitors have the opportunity to engage with the brewing process, as they explore the brewing space and savour beer offerings in the neighbouring taproom and cocktail bar. This inviting space is expertly managed by their partners at The Gin Box. The brewery taproom welcomes guests on both Fridays and Saturdays.
